When cupid strikes: Dr Bernard Cheong, 52, and Dolly Ong, 49
by Laura Tan

Dr Bernard Cheong, 52, and Dolly Ong, 49

Dr Cheong is a partner of Lifeline Medical Group while his wife is the company's financial controller. They have been married for 23 years and have two daughters aged 20 and 18.

How did you meet?

Dr Cheong: We met at a family dinner held at my uncle's house in the early 1980s. My uncle had married a cousin of Dolly's, so she was also invited.
Ong: I was a quiet girl from Pahang who came here to study accountancy at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on a scholarship from the Singapore Government.

Who made the first move?

Dr Cheong: I did. Dolly has always been a girl who stands out from the crowd, she is so beautiful. After meeting her at my uncle's house, I suggested that she join me and my doctor friends for dinner another day.
Ong: No, I asked him out first. After he suggested that we go out for dinner, we never did. So I asked him out after that.

What do you like most about your partner?

Dr Cheong: She is good-looking and learns and sees much more into matters than I do.
Ong: He's optimistic and has a very quick and forward way of saying things.

What is the best thing your partner has ever done for you?

Dr Cheong: She gave up a career in accountancy to raise our daughters. It would have taken her much further than I would have gone. She did it for me and our family.
Ong: He chose not to specialise in a medical field so as to have more time to spend with me and our family.
